Sewer Department Faces Clarifier Crisis and Contract Uncertainty

Sewer Department · Meeting of April 14, 2026

North Brookfield sewer faces clarifier replacement crisis and contract uncertainty. Sewer Superintendent Eric Cardenas reported April 14 that Clarifier Number 1 is deteriorating with obsolete replacement parts, requiring grant funding for replacement. The Synagro hauling contract expires June 30, 2026, prompting Cardenas to seek proposals from alternative haulers.

The UV disinfection system recently went online and is operating well. The department will replace 10 sewer frames and covers before a paving project and rebuild deteriorated exterior walls at the headworks facility. The Metheun treatment plant upgrade nears completion.
