DEP upgrades treatment plant, spurring staffing overhaul

Sewer Department · Meeting of January 13, 2026

North Brookfield Sewer Department approves staffing changes following state facility upgrade. The committee voted unanimously to retain a fourth operator position and approved reimbursement for Grade 6 license examination fees, up to five tests per operator at approximately 110 dollars each, following a Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection upgrade of the wastewater treatment facility from Grade 5C to Grade 6C. Sewer Superintendent Eric Cardenas will submit a staffing plan within 30 days, targeting one current operator's Grade 6 licensure within six months.

The upgraded classification requires two properly licensed Grade 6 operators to maintain regulatory compliance.
